12 trends that will sweep the world in 2022 – Experts predict what we’ll wear, watch and read in the year ahead

Goodbye 2021. Hello 2022. A new year is fast approaching, as is a dizzying array of new trends, moods and ideas. We’ll be shopping for new styles and tune in to a feast of new TV shows, but what trends will capture our attention and define the year ahead?

There was a time when trend forecasters looked through their crystal balls to guess their visions of future trends. Nowadays they have data analytics. Major tech companies, including Instagram, Pinterest, and Yelp, make data-driven trend forecasts at this time of year and their forecasts are generally accurate.

We dove deep into these reports to find out what’s on the horizon. Plus, we’ve spoken to some of Ireland’s top trendsetters and trend setters to get a feel for what lies ahead.

1. We will color ourselves happy

Bright, playful interiors and “dopamine dressing” are expected to become mainstream in 2022. Pantone’s Color of the Year, a purple-infused blue shade called “Very Peri” hints at the bright year ahead. Meanwhile, the kaleidoscope of jewelry colors on the Spring / Summer 2022 catwalks gave us a glimpse of what’s coming to stores. “There are a lot of bright colors in the new collections and I think it could come from the pandemic,” said Brown Thomas fashion purchasing director Shelly Corkery. “We call it ‘color me happy’.”

2. We will design our houses with natural materials

Nature-inspired materials like rattan, jute, and sisal dominated interior design in 2021. People wanted to feel connected to nature and create homes that were serene and calming. The trend will continue in 2022, says Róisín Lafferty of Kingston Lafferty Design, but it will evolve to incorporate natural stones and woods.

“People are getting more involved in creating a tactile and sensory environment,” she says, “and I see a real appreciation for the beautiful imperfection of natural stone and wood.

“For me, there is no comparison between the feel of these materials and the materials that mimic them. They add depth and quality to a home and it’s such a great place to start.

3. We will celebrate new milestones

If you thought gender reveal parties were a bit OTT, you ain’t seen nothing yet … According to Pinterest’s Year-End Trends Report, Millennials, Gen Xers, and Baby Boomers will continue to ” embrace celebrations that mark new milestones ”.

The search terms “adopt pet birthday party ideas”, “photoshoot in an empty nest” and “break cake” have gained in popularity. “Divorce nights” also have a moment. Just look at super-producer Dr Dre, who recently celebrated the end of his marriage to Nicole Young with a cheeky display of Golden Balloons labeled “Divorced AF.”

4. We will watch ‘The Gilded Age’

There is no shortage of TV events on the small screen in 2022.

The first half of OzarkNetflix’s fourth and final season debuts on Netflix on January 21, while season five of The crown premieres in November. Elsewhere, there’s a wave of anticipation surrounding Julian Fellowes’ historical drama Golden age, which arrives on Sky Atlantic on January 25. It looks like a cross between Succession and Downton abbey (another Fellowes move), and promises to fill the Bridgertonshaped hole in your life.

5. We will read ‘Black Cake’

Charmaine Wilkerson’s first novel Black cake sparked a multi-publisher auction in 2020. The following year there was a heated bidding war for the Harpo Films, co-produced television adaptation of Oprah Winfrey. The “family drama shrouded in mystery murder” hits bookstores in February, but we’ll have to wait a little longer for the TV version to hit our screens.

6. We will ask our beauticians about the reddening of the lips

Yelp’s 2022 Trend Forecast predicts the biggest beauty trends based on words and phrases that increased the most significantly in 2021. Searches for red mullet increased 73% (yes, it still happens) while that searches for curtain fringes (think Brigitte Bardot) increased by 828 pc.

Meanwhile, in the world of fits, it seems people are looking for alternatives to lip fillers. Research for “lip flips” (a Botox treatment that subtly lifts the upper lip) and blush (a form of semi-permanent makeup that enhances the natural color of the lips) are on the rise.

7. We will wear skirt suits

Hemlines will increase in 2022, said Shelly Corkery, fashion purchasing director of Brown Thomas, and the iconic skirt suit is set to make a comeback. “The Dior Spring 2022 collection had all these little bespoke suits and the Prada show had a great take on miniskirts with lots of tails. So I really have the impression that a more refined look emerges, with references to the 1960s, 1970s and 1990s. ”

8. We will adopt the circular economy

Generation Z has long paved the way for the circular economy. They represent the most active users in second-hand markets like DePop and Poshmark and they are more willing to use clothing rental services.

But according to Dee Bowman, co-founder of marketing and communications firm Lux-BE, the opportunity will become second nature to all of us in 2022. Citing a number of new partnerships between big brands and second-hand platforms , she says, “There is no doubt that clothing resale has become a mainstream and a legitimate player in the luxury retail market. “

9. We will go to retreats by the lake

Nature-based tourism will continue to grow in 2022, according to Pinterest Predicts. Gen Xers and Baby Boomers especially crave the seclusion and tranquility of lakeside retreats where they can relax by the water.

All-inclusive resorts and getaways are also all the rage, adds Pinterest Predicts, as more and more people “want to get away from it all to great getaways where they don’t have to lift a finger.”

10. We will eat high-end playful snacks

The pandemic has had a severe impact on the hospitality industry, says food consultant and writer Ali Dunworth, but chefs continue to adapt to the current climate. And as they experiment with new concepts and flavors, key trends begin to emerge.

“The fun, high-end snacks are hopefully here to stay,” says Ali, who quotes gildas (iconic pintxo from northern Spain) at Uno Mas, gougères (cheese puffs) at Ox and Library Street’s newly opened chicken wings as the best examples. “The chefs are having fun and putting a lot of effort into the snacks and they will continue to be an integral part of the menus in 2022,” she says. “In addition, more wine bars will follow this trend. “

11. We will listen to exercise music

According to Niall Byrne, aka Nialler9, drill music will gain even more ground in 2022. “It’s basically harder rap with a very particular style,” he explains. “I think drill music is growing in Ireland and it will continue. Drogheda-based collective A92 is doing very well and their YouTube numbers are insane. Their label, Trust It Entertainment, recently made a deal with Atlantic Records, as they obviously see huge potential in it. “

12. We will reassess our career priorities

Instagram’s Trend Report 2022 focuses on the likes and trends of Gen Z, who apparently are “constantly creating the future and setting the trends” on the social media platform.

According to their research, this generation is re-evaluating their education and career goals, with more than two-thirds rethinking the value of a college education, and 71 pc agree: “I would rather have a job that had to. meaning even if it means I earn less money ”.

Looks like the Great Resignation has only just begun …
